The typical vertebra features two lateral projections, one on each side of the arch of the vertebra. These projections are called |transverse processes|, and serve as points of attachment for muscles and ~ligaments~ which help control the flexibility of the |spine|. The intertransverse ~ligaments~ are examples of these, and are so named because they run along each side of the spinal column and connect the |transverse processes| of the |vertebrae|. The |transverse processes| are located on the segment of the vertebral arch known as the pedicle, which is located at the base of each side of the arch, just next to the |vertebral body|.
